Schatzberg’s most famous shot of Dylan is the ‘Blonde on Blonde’ cover, although it turns out it is far from his own favourite (and is not featured in the exhibition). Apparently, the blurred effect was caused by Dylan shivering on a cold morning. It was the only wobbly shot in the session, which Dylan personally selected for inscrutable reasons of his own, passing over Schatzberg’s own sharply focussed frame. Presumably for Dylan it was the closest representation of the “thin wild mercury sound” he heard in his head. But it means his photographer friend is chiefly remembered for camera wobble.
