20 years ago tonight I was watching Duke take their first steps in defending their NCAA title in Greensboro, NC. Tickets were $17 for lower level seats.

This list doesn’t even mention Steve Wojciechowski or Greg Newton’s haircut and is therefor INVALID. I expect better from you, Slate.

Two decades later, people still ask about his days as a walk-on. “Guys will say, ‘I hate Duke,’ ” Burt says, “but that must’ve been pretty cool, right?

But anger isn’t a foreign emotion; he’s fond of saying that it’s been a motivating tool for him, and he considers it a useful catalyst for changing bad situations. The classic example came after an embarrassing blowout loss to Ralph Sampson and Virginia in the 1983 ACC tournament — a loss that would lead a group of boosters to try to have him fired. At the dinner afterward, a member of the Duke staff raised a glass and said, “Here’s to forgetting tonight.” “No,” Coach K said, “here’s to never forgetting tonight.

Every boo, every middle finger, every “FUCK YOU LAETTNER,” every “Kentucky’s #1 Villain” poster he signs, is a reminder to him (and to neutral observers willing to pay attention) that he kicked Kentucky’s balls so hard they still ache in 2011.

Christian Laettner Is Still Trolling The State Of Kentucky, Even In Charity Games

The fact that “The Shot” is closing in on its 20th birthday makes me incredibly happy and unbelievably sad at the same time. I watched that game at a party in a room full of UNC fans and was 100% sure Duke was going to lose. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever jumped so high as I did when that ball went through the net. And then to be able to give it to a room full of suddenly silent UNC fans for the rest of the night? One of the best memories I have as a kid. Straight up.

The fact is Arizona went out in the second half last night and scored 55 points in 36 possessions. Nothing about that should have been possible…Derrick Williams kept his team within striking distance with a 25-point first half, but, continuing with our jaws-on-the-ground theme, 48 of Arizona’s 55 second-half points were scored by players not named “Derrick Williams.” The Cats missed 18 shots after halftime and pulled down 11 of those misses. They made 18 of 26 twos, many of which were of the emphatic zero-foot poster-ready variety.

Basketball Prospectus | Believe It

That was an ass-kicking in the truest sense of the phrase.

Kyle Singler makes baskets, and by baskets we mean one sitting on the bench, another from a courtside exercise bike, a third from a few rows deep in the stands, and a fourth from the Cameron Indoor rafters! I SMELL LOTTERY PICK!

I love Duke basketball. KYLE SINGLER, you’re my hero. Where you at, Leaf?!?

Sitting back, getting ready to count all the W’s from this season.
